Gecko Feeding Schedule – How Much, How Often, and What to Rotate?
One of the most common questions I hear from keepers of frugivorous geckos is: “How many times a week should I feed my gecko?”
The second is: “Do I need to rotate flavors or add insects?”
In this post, I’ll answer both questions and show you how to create an effective, healthy, and practical feeding plan using BioGecko Food.
📊 Why does a feeding plan matter?
Consistency in feeding means:
• better weight and condition control
• reduced risk of over- or underfeeding
• convenience for the keeper
• calmer, healthier gecko
🦎 Recommended feeding frequency
|
Age / condition |
Feeding frequency |
|
Juvenile (up to 6 months) |
Daily |
|
Adult |
3–4 times per week |
|
Older / less active |
2–3 times per week |
|
During shedding |
Reptiles often show reduced appetite |
Do not leave food out for more than 12 hours. BioGecko Food doesn’t dry out quickly, but leftovers should be removed regularly.
🥣 Portion and ratios
Per feeding:
• Adult gecko: 1 level teaspoon of powder + 2 teaspoons of water
• Juvenile gecko: ½ teaspoon of powder + 1 teaspoon of water
Serve the food in a shallow dish, a hanging dish, or offer with a spoon – preferably in the evening, when the gecko becomes active.
🔄 Flavor rotation – how and why?
BioGecko Food comes in 8 flavors, all with identical nutritional value. You can rotate them without affecting dietary balance.
Why rotate flavors?
• Increases appetite and curiosity
• Prevents dietary boredom
• Lets you observe flavor preferences
Sample weekly rotation plan:
|
Day of the week |
BioGecko Food flavor |
|
Monday |
Banana + Mango |
|
Tuesday |
Banana + Strawberry |
|
Wednesday |
break (or insect) |
|
Thursday |
Banana + Passion Fruit |
|
Friday |
Banana + Apple |
|
Saturday |
break (or more water) |
|
Sunday |
Banana + Dragon Fruit (Pitaya) |
💡 You can swap flavors or create your own combinations.
🐛 Should I offer live insects?
BioGecko Food contains BSF larvae and cricket meal, so additional insects are not required.
However! Once a week, you can offer a live insect as enrichment and behavioral stimulation (e.g., a cricket or roach).
❗ What to avoid?
• Don’t use fresh fruit as a staple diet
• Don’t add sweeteners to the food
• Don’t use expired mix
• Don’t overfeed – it can lead to obesity
🔎 Frequently Asked Questions:
Do I have to rotate flavors daily?
No, but it’s a good idea to change them every few days. Geckos enjoy variety.
What if my gecko won’t eat?
Try a different BioGecko Food flavor, and offer it using a wooden stirrer or spoon – gently touching the gecko’s mouth.
Can juvenile geckos eat all flavors?
Yes – absolutely.
